What requirements do PV cables have to meet?

Solar cables are part of the Balance of System (BOS) in a PV system and represent only 1-2% of the total installation costs. Nevertheless, they are crucial system components and it is important that they continue to function optimally so that power generation is not disrupted.

In July 2014, the first European standard for PV cables was published: Electrical cables for photovoltaic systems. In the Netherlands, NEN-EN 50618 has been in force since 1 January 2015 and according to NEN 1010:2015, the DC cables of a PV installation must be chosen in accordance with NEN-EN 50618.

NEN 1010:2015 contains regulations for the application of cable types under certain circumstances. Important environmental factors with regard to the cabling are in particular moisture, temperature and aggressive substances.

EcoCable Label

It is currently difficult for installers and specifiers to determine how sustainable a cable product is. There are no specific, certified eco-labels for the cable industry. This slows down the sustainability and CO2 reduction of electrical installations. To meet the growing demand for proof of environmentally friendly products, parent company Prysmian Group has become the first cable manufacturer to develop its own EcoCable label for cabling.
